NBA MVP Race 2021

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

The NBA makes it very clear that the MVP is awarded only on the merit of regular season play. With the regular season set to end in just a few weeks, we wanted to break down the top contenders and their current betting odds:

Nikola Jokic (-1000)

Jokic is a heavy favorite to win at this point. The big man’s most impressive trait this season has not been his high level passing, but his durability. Jokic has not missed a game this season. More games and total stats will go a long way with voters.

Joel Embiid (+450)

Embiid is the clear second favorite. If not for a handful of injuries and missed games, Philly’s star big man could be ahead of Jokic in this race. There is still a path to Embiid winning the MVP if the Sixers manage to win the East. They have a half game lead on the Nets when writing this.

Steph Curry (+2000)

Steph has kind of been a surprise contender. The Warriors struggled early but have since been surging, largely thanks to Curry. Any doubts whether Steph can lead a team on his own should be put to rest. If he gets the Warriors back into the playoffs, he could win the MVP.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (+2000)

The two-time defending champ is in the conversation for a three-peat, although it may be tough with the Bucks currently third in the East. A big 49-point effort in a signature win over the Nets this week definitely helped his case though.

Luka Doncic (+5000)

The Mavs have been up and down all season, but Luka has shined. He has developed a step back three that rivals that of James Harden. He also became only the fourth player in league history to record a 30+ point and 20+ assist game. Still, we would be very surprised to see Luka win this year.

LeBron James (+5000)

LeBron was the clear favorite early in the season, but a high ankle sprain that has kept him out for a month has really hurt his case. The best basketball player in the world really has been underappreciated in years past and it looks like he will miss out on winning another MVP award.
