It might be Super Bowl week, but the PGA Tour has a big event of their own with the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. The infamous 3-par 16th hole with the stadium seating should be back in full force after covid restrictions limited attendance last season. It is going to be an exciting day, but without wasting more time letting that out, let's get into our picks. Unlike the last few weeks, we finally have an event at only one course, which makes it much easier to project builds based on the weekend’s stats. This week, we will focus more on strokes gained on approach, greens in regulation, strokes gained off the tee, birdie or better scoring, and strokes gained putting. The weather is expected to be warm, with little wind and no real issues to be concerned about. Weather is always a factor and subject to change, so checking DFS lineups closer to lock will be crucial. In this post, we use our full set of metrics and highlight some of our favorite golfers in the competition:
Hideki Matsuyama ($10,400-DK; +1400 to win)
Rahm is always an obvious play, but if you want to differentiate your build, consider Matsuyama who has won this event twice in his career. Matsuyama’s putter has been off lately, but if he can straighten that out, he certainly has a chance to finish very high this week.
Seamus Power ($8,400-DK; +4000 to win)
Power has been a golfer that we have picked plenty so far this season, but even we did not project his recent form. He has finished in the top 15 in four straight events to start the season. Power makes it tough to pick against him, especially at this price.
Keith Mitchell ($7,500-DK; +7000 to win)
Digging for a bit of value, we like Mitchell who ranks in the top 30 in ball striking so far this season. He has started 2022 hot, with two top 12 finishes, including T12 last week at Pebble. Mitchell also finished 16th here in 2020.
