The expanded 48-team World Cup has finally arrived.
With 12 groups, more matches, and more opportunities for surprises, the group stage will be one of the most important betting markets of the entire tournament. While the eventual champion often grabs the headlines, identifying which teams advance — and which favorites stumble — can provide some of the best value on the board.
Below, we're predicting the winner and runner-up from every group while highlighting a few betting angles along the way. While the expanded format allows many third-place teams to advance, we're focusing on the two teams most likely to finish atop each group. Group compositions are based on the official World Cup draw.
⚽Group A - Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czechia
Mexico benefits from both home-field support and a relatively favorable draw. The atmosphere in Mexican-hosted matches should feel more like a home tournament than a neutral-site World Cup, and that advantage matters during the group stage.
South Korea should have enough quality to finish second. Their experience on the international stage and ability to remain organized defensively gives them an edge over South Africa and Czechia.
Winner: Mexico (-115 to win)
Runner-Up: South Korea (-310 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Mexico to win Group A is one of the safer group futures available.
⚽Group B - Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland
Switzerland feels undervalued entering this tournament. They consistently navigate difficult groups and possess one of the deepest squads outside the traditional European powers.
Canada's golden generation should capitalize on home support and advance comfortably. While Bosnia is capable of causing problems, Canada has more top-end talent and athleticism.
Winner: Switzerland (-135 to win)
Runner-Up: Canada (-750 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Switzerland to win the group may some value, but be careful picking against this energized and organized host nation.
⚽Group C - Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
Brazil should control this group from start to finish. The return of Neymar alongside an already elite collection of attacking talent gives them arguably the highest ceiling in the tournament.
The battle for second place seems straightforward as well. Morocco are strong contenders to advance after their remarkable rise over the past several years. Their defensive structure and tournament experience make them a difficult opponent for anyone.
Winner: Brazil (-350 to win)
Runner-Up: Morocco (-1000 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Morocco advancing from the group is one of the stronger qualification bets available.
⚽Group D - United States, Turkey, Australia, Paraguay
This is one of the most competitive groups in the tournament. The United States enters the tournament with the advantage of playing on home soil and arguably the deepest, most talented roster in program history. Led by stars such as Christian Pulisic and a core entering its prime years, the Americans have the athleticism and attacking quality to control matches against any team in Group D. If they capitalize on the energy of home crowds and avoid costly mistakes, the U.S. has a strong chance not only to advance but to finish atop the group.
After reaching the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024, Turkey have continued to build around a talented young core that combines technical quality with attacking flair. If their creative players can consistently generate chances, Turkey has every opportunity to challenge for first place in Group D and make a deep run into the knockout stages.
Of note, the Socceroos have reached the knockout stage in two of the last three World Cups and continue to thrive as an organized, physical side that is difficult to break down. If they can earn a result against Turkey in the opener, Australia has a very realistic path to finishing in the top two.
Paraguay represents yet another dangerous underdog in Group D. South American qualifying is notoriously difficult, and Paraguay arrives battle-tested after navigating CONMEBOL competition. Their defensive discipline and ability to grind out low-scoring results could make them a nightmare matchup throughout the group stage.
Winner: United States (+140 to win)
Runner-Up: Turkey (-500 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Don't be surprised if this group produces one of the strongest third-place teams in the tournament.
⚽Group E - Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Curaçao
Germany landed one of the friendliest draws among the tournament favorites. With Jamal Musiala leading a talented core, they should comfortably win this group.
Ecuador also seems in line for a comfortable path to the knockout stage. Their young, athletic squad proved its quality during South American qualifying, where every match presents a difficult test. With a disciplined defense and the ability to create chances in transition, Ecuador should be favored against both Ivory Coast and Curaçao, making them a strong candidate to secure second place behind Germany.
Winner: Germany (-250 to win)
Runner-Up: Ecuador (-900 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Ecuador to qualify is another strong value play in the group stage.
⚽Group F - Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
The Netherlands possess too much overall talent not to top this group. They should dominate possession against most opponents and create enough chances to comfortably advance.
Japan has become one of the most consistently dangerous teams on the international stage, reaching the knockout rounds in two of the last three World Cups. Their combination of technical quality, tactical discipline, and relentless work rate makes them a difficult matchup for any opponent. If they can replicate the form that has produced wins over several European powers in recent years, Japan has a strong chance to advance from Group F and could even challenge the Netherlands for first place.
Sweden should not be overlooked in what appears to be a competitive race for second place. The Swedes have a long history of success in major international tournaments and are known for their organized defensive structure and physical style of play. If they can grind out results against Japan and Tunisia, Sweden has a realistic path to advancing to the knockout rounds.
Winner: Netherlands (-125 to win)
Runner-Up: Japan (-400 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Japan is a dark horse to exceed expectations throughout the tournament.
⚽Group G - Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand
This may be Belgium's final opportunity with several veteran stars still contributing at a high level. While they're no longer among the tournament favorites, they should still have enough quality to win the group.
Egypt enters the tournament with one of the most influential players in world football leading the way in Mohamed Salah. While Belgium is the favorite to win the group, Egypt's experience, defensive organization, and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities make them a strong candidate to finish second. If Salah can deliver in the biggest moments, Egypt has the talent to advance and potentially surprise a few teams in the knockout stage.
Winner: Belgium (-220 to win)
Runner-Up: Egypt (-340 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Egypt could be one of the more dangerous underdogs in the Round of 32.
⚽Group H - Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde
Spain received one of the most favorable draws among the elite nations and should be heavily favored to win the group. Many sportsbooks currently view Spain as one of the strongest contenders to lift the trophy.
Uruguay remains battle-tested and possesses enough experience to comfortably finish second. Their blend of experienced veterans and emerging young stars gives them a balanced squad capable of competing with anyone in the tournament. While Spain is the favorite to win Group H, Uruguay's defensive discipline and tournament pedigree make them a strong bet to advance to the knockout rounds.
Winner: Spain (-475 to win)
Runner-Up: Uruguay (-1000 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Spain winning all three group matches is worth consideration if the odds are reasonable.
⚽Group I - France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq
Group I and Group D are arguably the toughest in the tournament. France enters as one of the favorites to win the it all thanks to Kylian Mbappé and arguably the deepest squad in world football. We do not expect Les Bleus to struggle much in the group stage.
Norway gets the nod for second place largely because of Erling Haaland's game-changing ability. Haaland, giving them a game-changing weapon capable of deciding matches on his own. Combined with a talented supporting cast and growing international experience, Norway has the quality to challenge for a knockout-stage berth. If they can earn a result against Senegal, Norway has a strong path to advancing from one of the tournament's toughest groups.
Still, Senegal should not be overlooked despite landing in a difficult group alongside France and Norway. They remain one of Africa's strongest national teams, combining athleticism, defensive organization, and big-match experience gained from recent international success. If Senegal can continue to frustrate opponents defensively and capitalize on scoring opportunities, they have every chance to advance to the knockout rounds.
Winner: France (-215 to win)
Runner-Up: Norway (-900 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Norway advancing from this group could be one of the most popular upset picks among bettors.
⚽Group J - Argentina, Austria, Algeria, Jordan
The defending champions should have little trouble topping Group J. Even with Lionel Messi approaching the final stages of his career, Argentina remains one of the most complete teams in the field.
Austria has quietly emerged as one of Europe's most improved national teams and enters the World Cup with confidence after several strong international performances. Their high-energy style, tactical discipline, and depth across the squad make them a difficult opponent for any team outside the tournament favorites. In a group where Argentina is expected to finish first, Austria has a strong opportunity to secure second place and advance to the knockout rounds.
Algeria possesses enough talent and experience to make life difficult for every team in Group J. Known for their technical ability and attacking flair, they have consistently been one of Africa's most dangerous sides when at full strength. If Algeria can find consistency in front of goal and avoid costly defensive mistakes, they have a realistic chance of competing with Austria for a place in the knockout stage.
Winner: Argentina (-265 to win)
Runner-Up: Austria (-500 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Austria is a sneaky candidate to reach the Round of 16.
⚽Group K - Portugal, Colombia, Uzbekistan, DR Congo
Portugal enters the World Cup with one of the deepest and most talented squads in the tournament, blending elite attacking options with high-level defensive stability. Even with a stacked supporting cast, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the headline figure, bringing unmatched experience, leadership, and a constant goal threat in key moments. In a manageable group, Portugal has every tool needed to win comfortably, but their ceiling ultimately depends on whether their attacking depth clicks around Ronaldo in what could be his final World Cup run.
Colombia may be one of the most underrated teams in the field. Their blend of experience and attacking creativity should comfortably carry them into the knockout rounds. Some analysts even view them as a dark horse to make a deep run.
Winner: Portugal (-200 to win)
Runner-Up: Colombia (-1000 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Portugal vs. Colombia could decide group positioning, but both should advance.
⚽Group L - England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama
Here's the bold prediction. England enters almost every major tournament with massive expectations, yet they continue to underperform relative to market pricing. The talent is undeniable, but the pressure and tactical inconsistencies remain concerns. England should be expected to advance comfortably into the knockout stages—just likely not at the top of the group.
Croatia has built a reputation for exceeding expectations in tournament football. Led by a core of experienced midfielders who control tempo and dictate games, they rarely lose composure in tight group-stage matches. In a group where England will attract most of the attention, Croatia’s structure, experience, and ability to grind out results make them a legitimate favorite to finish top of the group and secure a favorable knockout draw.
Winner: Croatia (+320 to win)
Runner-Up: England (-1000 to advance)
👉Betting Note: Fading England futures remains one of our favorite positions entering the tournament.
🧠Final Thoughts
The World Cup group stage often rewards disciplined, experienced teams more than flashy squads loaded with star power. While favorites such as Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal should advance comfortably, identifying the Moroccos, Japans, Norways, and Ecuadors of the tournament can provide some of the best betting value available.
Good luck, and enjoy the greatest sporting event in the world! 🌎🏆
