After a dramatic finish at the 3M Open, the PGA Tour heads to Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Classic, one of the final opportunities for players to secure FedEx Cup positioning before the postseason begins.

Detroit has long been known as one of the Tour's premier birdie-fests, although course renovations have slightly increased the challenge this season by converting the layout from a par 72 to a par 70. Even with the changes, expect another low-scoring week where birdie makers, elite drivers, and hot putters rise to the top. The stronger-than-usual field adds even more intrigue, with Cameron Young, Xander Schauffele, Chris Gotterup, and several in-form players making the trip to Michigan.

Course Breakdown: Detroit Golf Club

  • Par 70

  • Approximately 7,300 yards

  • Bentgrass greens

  • Donald Ross design

The biggest storyline this year is the course renovation. Two reachable par 5s have been converted into lengthy par 4s, making Detroit Golf Club play significantly tougher than in previous seasons. While winning scores may fall from the typical 22-under range, this should still be one of the more scoreable stops on Tour thanks to generous fairways and receptive greens.

🔑 Key Stats to Target

Because players will still have plenty of scoring opportunities, we are prioritizing:

  • Strokes Gained: Approach

  • Birdie or Better Percentage

  • Strokes Gained: Off the Tee

  • Driving Distance

  • Opportunities Gained

Poor putters can survive here if they're giving themselves enough birdie looks.

☁️Weather Forecast

Early forecasts call for typical Detroit summer conditions with warm temperatures, manageable winds, and little weather expected to significantly impact scoring. Unless forecasts change dramatically before lock, weather should not be a major factor in lineup construction.

As always, monitor final forecasts Wednesday night in case an unexpected wave advantage develops.

💰DFS Strategy

This week's pricing creates an interesting decision at the top. Cameron Young enters as the betting favorite following an outstanding runner-up finish at The Open Championship and profiles as arguably the best course fit in the field. He possesses elite distance while also ranking among the strongest birdie makers available.

Rather than forcing balanced builds, we expect to start many lineups with one elite golfer before attacking the deep mid-tier where several players carry legitimate win equity.

Ownership should also condense around recent form, making leverage plays especially valuable in large-field tournaments.

Cash Game Core

Cameron Young ($10,500 DK; +970 to win)

Young checks every box this week.

He's arriving with elite form after contending at The Open, owns multiple strong finishes at Detroit Golf Club, and remains one of the best drivers in professional golf. Even with the tougher setup, his length creates a significant advantage. He'll likely be one of the highest-owned golfers on the slate, but fading him in cash games feels unnecessarily risky.

Si Woo Kim ($9,600 DK; +1950 to win)

Kim continues putting together one of the steadiest seasons on Tour. His consistency tee-to-green makes him an excellent cash option, especially on a course that rewards elite iron play. While his putting can occasionally disappear, his high floor should keep him firmly in contention throughout the weekend.

Ben Griffin ($8,900 DK; +2900 to win)

Griffin continues to outperform expectations nearly every week. His balanced statistical profile gives him multiple paths to fantasy scoring, and he remains priced below many golfers with similar upside.

GPP Targets

Chris Gotterup ($9,800 DK; +1800 to win)

Gotterup has quietly developed into one of the premier power players on Tour.

Detroit has historically rewarded bombers capable of generating eagle opportunities and easy birdies. If his putter cooperates, he has legitimate tournament-winning upside while carrying lower ownership than Cameron Young.

Jake Knapp ($8,800 DK; +3300 to win)

Knapp always brings volatility, making him an ideal GPP target. Few players in this field possess his combination of driving distance and birdie-making ability. That aggressive style also creates missed-cut risk, but tournaments are won by embracing variance.

Ben James ($7,300 DK; +9600 to win)

James continues offering one of the better salary-saving options. His recent ball striking has been excellent, and he's demonstrated enough consistency to pay off his modest salary while still carrying top-20 upside.

🧠 Final Thoughts

Even after the renovations, Detroit Golf Club should continue rewarding aggressive golfers who create plenty of birdie opportunities. Prioritize strong ball strikers who can attack pins, and don't be afraid to embrace volatility in tournaments.

Good luck this week, and as always, monitor final weather updates and ownership projections before lock.
